 The
people of Cerne Abbas would have initially used the nave of the Benedictine Abbey
church, founded in 987AD, for their devotions. However, in about 1300 the monks
built the foundations of the present church. The first vicar, Robert de Mule born,
was inducted in 1317.
A
History of the Church has been written by the Society and is on public
display in the church. The Society has also produced a fully
illustrated Guide to this lovely church. The
Society has written a history
of the village of Cerne Abbas and its most iconic symbol, the Giant. This
is also on public display in the church. The
Church is open every day during daylight hours. St Mary's is an active church
and there are Services on Sunday and also on Thursday at 10am. Visitors at these
times are very welcome, either to join in or to wander around quietly. |
